Billy Gilmour takes another step closer to first team return

Billy Gilmour picked up an injury at the worst possible time last year, killing his great progress towards first team action.

It’s been a long road back, but he’s almost reached the end of it.

After training with the first team, then playing for the Scotland U21 team in the international break last week, he was ready for a start last night for the Chelsea development squad.

The game in the EFL trophy saw a cobbled together Blues beaten 4-3 by Bristol Rovers, but the important thing was that Gilmour played a full hour from the start.

That should set him up nicely for 90 minutes next week, and from there he should be ready for action off the bench for the first team.

This season will be full of opportunities with injuries and fatigue sure to set in soon, so it’s great to have Billy on the sidelines ready to step in
