Ben Chilwell’s England place at risk after rapid return for Chelsea

Ben Chilwell is Gareth Southgate’s first choice option at left back for England – or at least he has been.

The whispers in the Daily Mail last night were that  the left back is in hot water with the national team manager after being substituted injured against Belgium.

There’s nothing wrong with that in itself, of course, but the issue is that he’s now playing for Chelsea against Newcastle with apparently no issue.

He had returned to the England bench for the match against Iceland earlier this week, but didn’t feature.

Chilwell was playing his first England game in a year against Belgium, but despite that looked favourite to be Southgate’s man going forward given he was in great form for a club towards the top of the Premier League.

Now, suddenly, that looks much less certain. Saka is a serious player, and Chilwell will have to prove his commitment for England all over again if he wants to regain a starting spot.
