Why it’s unlikely Chelsea will allow Billy Gilmour to go on loan in January

There have been a few reports floating around this morning suggesting that Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour could be off on loan in January.

The stories surfaced from an article in The Athletic based on an agent’s opinion that Gilmour should and could try and force a loan move this winter.

However, there are two main reasons that Frank Lampard is unlikely to agree to Gilmour being loaned out.

One being he is still injured and is not expected back much before January, therefore recovering at Chelsea and getting match fitness and minutes will be the wisest move, rather than sending him away.

Secondly, Chelsea will need Gilmour after having let both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley leave on loan this summer.

With concerns on the overall fitness of N’Golo Kante, and the suitability of Jorginho for the role that Lampard wants his defensive midfielder to play, Gilmour will be a perfect option for Lampard to use this season.

His versatility to be able to play in any central midfield role is also a massive bonus and it would be silly to send him on loan.
