Chelsea’s front 3 were firing today, their defence looked strong and assured, and both Mason Mount and Kai Havertz looked excellent shutting in the middle of the park.
But one man who really stood out – as he so often does – was N’Golo Kante.
The midfielder hasn’t had his best run of form recently, but despite being all on his own at the base of midfield, the three lunged Frenchman excelled both in breaking down Burnley’s play and composing Chelsea’s play from deep.
He had to take the ball off his goalkeeper a lot, but he was always able to find his fellow midfielders, and everything ended up going through him. Meanwhile, he allowed nothing going back the other way. It was “midfield domination”, as one Twitter user put it.
Fans on social media were simply purring as you might expect, and you can see a selection of their reaction embedded below:
Kante back at his natural CDM makes us a drastically better team

N'Golo Kante at the heart of this midfied domination. This new formation is built around him. #CFC

Kante has been playing these passes all game

Makes a difference how key Kante is when his role isn’t to become a more ‘creative’ player. That’s what you can do when you have players like Werner, Ziyech & Havertz. Mount looks confident in this position as well which is great to see! 🙌

Can we just take a breath for a second and note how good N'Golo Kante is today?

I’ve got to give it to Kante today, when the man isn’t being put any under pressure at the base of midfield he does his job exceptionally well. If he can stay fit and keep on performing at this level then Chelsea FC may win the… you know… 👀🏆
