Frank Lampard names his number one goalkeeper for the season

Frank Lampard had summer signing Edouard Mendy to thank for a clean sheet tonight after the goalkeeper made a crucial reaction save to keep the score 0-0.

The Chelsea manager was asked after the game whether the Senegal stopper was now his unquestioned number one, and he didn’t hesitate to admit that was the case in quotes picked up Goal.com.

“I think the way he has played in the three games since being here, he has played very well. Made a good save today, two clean sheets,” Lampard responded to questions about whether the former Rennes man was now his chosen number one.

“So at the minute, yes. I said when he came in it was good for competition. We knew his qualities and he is showing them already. So as it stands, yes it is. But that always remains something that is up for grabs, so that is why you have competition at clubs. The way he is playing I am very happy.”

Most Chelsea fans were pretty happy themselves to see how confident and assured their new signing looked. After almost a year of terrible form from Kepa Arrizabalaga, the feeling of having someone in your own net who you trust feels special.

Assuming Mendy’s injury doesn’t return, we expect serious progress from this team now they are able to rely on their man at the back and can start to build relationships throughout the side.
