Frank Lampard explains when he might use Petr Cech

Chelsea played out a 0-0 draw against Sevilla tonight, but there was big news off the pitch too that drew a lot of attention.

Just when we were all eagerly awaiting the team news from Stamford Bridge for the Champions League tie against the Spanish side, people started to notice that Petr Cech had been included on the squad list for the Premier League for the club.

Perhaps inevitably after a 0-0, Frank Lampard was asked about the administrative move, and sought to play it down as simply a Covid precaution.

He did however, end up explaining the exact situation in which he would end up using the club legend as a player again:

“It’s not done for the romance of what he has done before,” the manager explained, denying it was a sentimental move in quotes picked up by Football.London.

“It’s not something I would expect to happen, but if we are in crisis then there are few people better to have around than Cech.”

It certainly would take a crisis now, with Edouard Mendy fit and playing in goal again for the team. He would have to be struck down, and Kepa would have to be playing so badly (as he appears to be) that a director of football putting on the gloves would seem like a better idea than using him.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
