Frank Lampard explains why Hakim Ziyech’s performance was so good

Hakim Ziyech agreed to join Chelsea way back at the start of February, and yet tonight was his first competitive game since March.

The Dutch league was called off then, and his only start since was in a friendly against Brighton at the start of the season.

It was for exactly that reason that Frank Lampard was so pleased with his new signings first proper start. The Chelsea boss said that Ziyech’s performance was “very, very good when you consider he hasn’t started a match since March.”

We can expect better to come, but it was impressive how up to speed the Morocco star looked already. He got a nice goal, one which came in the second half, showing he’s already capable of playing extended periods despite only having taken the first steps in his Chelsea career.

Lampard now has big selection problems on his hands for this weekend. How is Mason Mount ever going to get back into this team with so much competition in midfield? This is the kind of depth we’ve been desperate for.
