Edouard Mendy – “Petr Cech has been watching my matches for a number of years”

New Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has had a very promising start to his Chelsea career, gaining some confidence boosting clean sheets, as well as putting in some good performances.

The 28-year old was a signing you felt Chelsea really needed to get over the line as perhaps one of the most important of all this summer, this is despite already having the clubs most expensive signing as their number one stopper.

But Kepa Arrizabalaga is a man with zero confidence, and his Chelsea career already looks over.

Mendy already looks a man twice in stature, and not just physically.

But the ability of Mendy comes as no surprise to Chelsea, they have been watching him for some time. Technical director Petr Cech has been watching him for years, according to Mendy himself.

The Senegalese international took part in his first Chelsea press conference yesterday, and the Chelsea website has typed up his words.

He said:

“I have been aware that Petr Cech has been watching my matches for a number of years and it is always really pleasing to hear he has been saying he liked my profile and the way I was performing,’ said the new arrival.

“So after my season at Rennes, the offer came in from Chelsea and it is a source of great pride for me to join this club, and thanks to Petr and also Christoph [Lollichon – a current coach at Chelsea and a former one at Rennes] who were following me.

“Here at Chelsea obviously everybody approved my signing, and now it is up to me to show that they were right to take an interest in me and to have brought me to the club.

“To be at a club where such great goalkeepers have played is fantastic and very important to me. I am aware of the expectations that surround the goalkeeper position at Chelsea, but I am not going to put any pressure on myself and compare myself to legends here.

“I have only just arrived so my aim is to carry on progressing and when the coach asks me, to make sure I am there for the team and helping with their success.”
