“Chelsea have not had a player” like this for some time – pundit raves about new summer signing

Chelsea certainly made some very shiny new signings this summer in what was a very successful window in terms of arrivals for the club.

With the big names such as Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, and Hakim Ziyech costing Chelsea a small fortune, there was one player who cost absolutely nothing, and might already be staking his claim to be the signing of the summer.

36-year old Brazilian international, Thiago Silva.

He has already become a huge presence in Chelsea’s back line, one that has helped them gain three clean sheets in the last four matches, something that was unheard of for Frank Lampard’s side last season.

Silva has come in and bought an element of calmness and organisation that Lampard badly needed in his defence.

BBC pundit Garth Crooks believes that ‘Chelsea have not had a player at the back like this for some time’.

Crooks names Silva in his team of the week after a top class performance in Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

He said:

“Chelsea have not had a player at the back like this for some time. Defenders don’t come more accomplished than Silva.

“The former Brazil international has brought a desperately needed calm to the Blues defensive line up. His positional sense and reading of the game are his specialities.

“Had it not been for Silva, his former Paris St-Germain team-mate Edinson Cavani would have almost certainly found himself on the scoresheet.

“At 36, Silva looks like he’s never been in a pub in his life. What a pity for Chelsea he’s not a few years younger.”
