Ben Chilwell could still start against Southampton despite withdrawing from England duty injured

As we reported earlier on Chelsea News, Ben Chilwell has been withdrawn from the England squad, because of a recurrence of the foot injury that troubled him all summer.

Blues fans have been despairing – he’s only been able to play for us once since recovering the first time – but they shouldn’t give up hope just yet.

There is an angle on things that says the left back’s withdrawal is just precautionary and not a response to an actual problem. He didn’t play the friendly against Wales because of coronavirus risks, and he then missed the Belgium game because of separate illness issues.

Given he basically didn’t train with the squad all week, could it be that Gareth Southgate has simply decided not to use him tomorrow, and therefore is happy to release him back to his club ahead of the weekend? the foot injury issue could just be a convenient cover after an agreement between Frank Lampard and the England boss.

UPDATE: Nizaar Kinsella of Goal.com speculated that that could be the case, in the Tweet you can see above, and Matt Law has since confirmed that in the Tweet you can see below.
