Unwanted players linger at Chelsea as bloated Blues look to trim squad

Chelsea have made a lot of signings this summer, leaving them with a large squad that needs to be trimmed.

The new faces – Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and the rest – have all added a fresh enthusiasm and optimism at Cobham. But there are some pretty glum faces there too.

Danny Drinkwater, Timeoue Bakayoko and Emerson Palmieri are all still hanging around, knowing that they will likely leave if offers come in for then.

There’s also the question of Antonio Rudiger, who now seems to be bottom of the pecking order in central defence. It’s hard to see the club turning down an offer for him should they receive a suitable one.

Then there are the young players still waiting to see if suitable loans can be found, or whether staying around the first team squad is the right move. Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to start tonight in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley, but whether he sticks around much longer after that isn’t clear.

The fun part of the window – the buying – is over. Now the tough part – the selling – begins.
