“Very, very pleased” – New Chelsea goalkeeper passes debut test

Frank Lampard said he was “very, very pleased” with the debut of new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy last night, despite the Blues going out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

Mendy failed to save a single Spurs penalty, but we know these kicks can be a total lottery.

Thankfully, the Senegal international had a good 90 minutes pulling off a few top saves, and coming to collect a number of crosses.

He was also very vocal throughout, instructing his new team mates around the pitch.

Mendy was very close to keeping a clean sheet as well if it wasn’t for a late goal from Spurs after yet another defensive error from Chelsea that was no fault of the keeper.

It was a poor night for Chelsea on the whole, but at least Mendy will go away with his head held high after knowing he impressed the boss on game one for him.

As reported by Goal, Lampard said:

“I thought he was very good. He made a couple of good saves, one particularly good save.

“He came and caught a few balls, even the one where he came and didn’t catch, the idea that he wants to be positive is not a bad thing. Very, very pleased with every part of his game, really.”
