Jamie Carragher says Timo Werner wouldn’t start for Liverpool

Jamie Carragher was on colour commentary duties for Chelsea’s Monday Night Football game against Brighton last night, and the former Liverpool player wasn’t short of opinions.

He was impressed by Timo Werner, but stated he didn’t think that he would get into his former team’s starting lineup. The Daily Mail had his quotes from the live broadcast on Sky Sports.

“He could be,” the former defender said when asked whether Werner might be the “one that got away.” But he then couldn’t resist defending his old team’s failure to secure the German striker’s signing:

“Right now, he wouldn’t get in the Liverpool front three.”

There is certainly a huge amount of talent in that side – Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are about as good as you get in the wide forward positions, and Werner wouldn’t find it easy breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s team.

However with the quality he has, and with Roberto Firmino’s pretty poor scoring record, we reckon even the high-flying Reds would find a way to squeeze him in.
