Gary Neville explains what Frank Lampard has done to make Roman Abramovich happy

Opinions in the media on this Chelsea team have gone back and forth over the season – at first they loved to praise the way Frank Lampard had his young players playing, then they tended to turn against him as the defending didn’t improve and the results got worse.

Overall most ended up agreeing it was a good season of transition, and speaking in a video on Sky Sports, Gary Neville said that it was the attacking style of play that Lampard had brought in that was triggering Roman Abramovich’s spending spree.

“Roman Abramovich has wanted, for 15 years, a flamboyant team. I do think what Frank Lampard has done is invigorate the academy players finally coming through… a team that plays in a different way, more energetic. that’s what he wants, he wants excitement and thrill around Chelsea and that’s why he’s invested this summer.”

We completely agree. There’s a reason Roman is willing to open his chequebook so wide this summer, and if he didn’t have faith in Lampard or the football he was playing he wouldn’t be sanctioning these moves.

Unlike some in the media, Abramovich has seen the potential and the exciting football that his team played for long stretches last season, and he’s willing to back his manager to make it a long-term fixture.

We can’t wait to find out how it all plays out.
