David James warns new Chelsea signing that the club is bad for goalkeepers

Chelsea have today completed the signing of Edouard Mendy, a goalkeeper to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has struggled desperately in the last 12 months.

TalkSport had former England and Liverpool goalkeeper David James on their station today to discuss the situation, and he had a huge amount of sympathy for Kepa, and a warning for Mendy.

He noted that Chelsea were replacing an expensive flop with a cheaper option, and said it lead him to question “is the environment right for either goalkeeper”?

He compared the situation to Liverpool’s struggles in the last few years. They signed one of the Premier League’s top performers in Simon Mignolet, who struggled. Then they bought Loris Karius, who was even worse.

Perhaps Chelsea’s issue isn’t Kepa, but the defence, the coaching, and the other factors that make up his “environment” at the club?

Or, perhaps Kepa is just not that good at goalkeeping.
