Chelsea got “20 or 30%” discount on summer spending spree

Chelsea were in a unique position this summer, able to spend big after a year out of the transfer market while other teams were struggling just to survive.

The Blues haven’t held back, and they’ve upgraded the whole spine of their team in one go. They’ve got defenders, midfielders and strikers already bought, with a goalkeeper maybe on the way.

It’s cost a lot, but not nearly as much as it could have, according to well-known agent Kia Joorabchian. Speaking on TalkSport in quotes picked up by established Chelsea Twitter account ChelsTransfer, Joorabchian commented that the Blues have paid “20 or 30 per cent less than they would have done in a buoyant market.”

That’s in line with how these signings felt. Kai Havertz came in for £70m when he was supposed to cost £100m. Ben Chilwell for £55m when Leicester apparently wanted £80m, and so on.

It was just luck in the way things panned out, but Chelsea deserve credit for pressing the advantage so ruthlessly as other teams found themselves in chaos.
