Chelsea can’t wrap up goalkeeper transfer as French side continue to push for Blues defender

Chelsea have been linked with Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with increasing strength over the last month or so, but the deal is not yet done.

A report in France today explains why.

Get French Football News report that TV programme Telefoot are saying that Rennes are pushing for Fikayo Tomori to be included in the deal, along with a serious sum of money.

It’s hard to see Chelsea agreeing to that. They might send him on loan there, but the young defender has serious potential and a serious future at Champions League level. Trading him for a 27 year old goalkeeper doesn’t seem like great value, especially if you’re adding cash on top of that.

A free loan – maybe with an option to buy – plus €20m or so for Mendy seems reasonable to us, and we imagine if Tomori does go, it will be as part of a deal structured something like that.
