Chelsea agree fee for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

Two days ago we reported on the rumours that Chelsea had agreed personal terms with Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. As we said at the time, all that remained then was the agreement between clubs.

Now, according to Nizaar Kinsella of Goal.com, that bridge has been crossed. He’s reporting that Chelsea now have agreed a deal for the 27 year old, who will be their 7th senior signing of a busy summer.

Nobody is naming a fee yet, but something in the region of £20m seems to be what’s expected.

It is not the most expensive or the most impressive, but it does perhaps fill the biggest gap, given the struggles we had with Kepa in the net last season.

It’s not quite clear what the rules will be regarding his move and coronavirus regulations, but either way a debut on Monday night against Brighton seems unlikely, even if a deal has indeed been finalised.

Next Sunday’s clash with Liverpool seems a much more realistic prospect at this stage, with Willy Caballero ready to fill in on Monday against Brighton.
