The Athletic: Chelsea actively looking to sign a new holding midfielder

The transfer window slams shut in just under two weeks, and it looks like Chelsea will make one last push to sign one more high calibre player.

Chelsea want to sign a new holding midfielder, according to The Athletic.

Frank Lampard does not count N’Golo Kante as a holding midfielder, and there are doubts over the ability of Jorginho to play that role, as well as doubts over his Chelsea future.

It appears that Lampard wants a more robust and traditional defensive midfielder, and the name Declan Rice pops up yet again.

Chelsea are expected to make a move to sign the West Ham midfielder imminently, despite his club being determined not to sell by valuing him at £80 million.

But Rice putting in a request to move to his club could see it move along, and Chelsea may also offer Ross Barkley as part of the deal in an attempt to bring the price down, as per the same report from The Athletic.
