The mirror between the start and the finish of Chelsea’s season

Chelsea’s season really ended last weekend, with a defeat in the FA Cup final. But there was still a further game to play, albeit one that wasn’t particularly meaningful.

The match against Bayern Munich was a dead rubber in reality, but it still stung to get four goals put past us, even against top opposition.

It meant that the season ended on a rather flat note, despite the successes along the way, and as one journalist pointed out to begin the post-match press conference, it had some eerie similarity to how the season had begun.

Way back in August, just under a year ago, Frank Lampard took charge of the Blues against Manchester United in the opening game of the season – and conceded four there, despite good moments in the game.

In the end, it would go on to be a recurring theme of the whole campaign in many ways – good moments undone by sloppiness in defence.

19/20 began that way and finished that way. The question now is what the theme of 20/21 will be.
