Chelsea’s bid for Barcelona goalkeeper doesn’t add up

Cadena Ser are one of Spain’s top radio stations for sports, and when they report something, you can usually trust it – at least more than your average football blog…

In this case however, we’ve got our doubts. The word is that Chelsea and Bayern Munich have bid for Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, the Barcelona goalkeeper.

There are a few reasons to doubt it. Firstly, the potential cost of the stopper. Chelsea spent the world record fee for a goalkeeper two summers ago, and would have to do so again to land the German. It’s very hard to imagine that.

There’s also the Bayern Munich angle – they have Manuel Neuer in goal, and this summer have Alexander Nubel arriving to compete with him. It seems very unlikely they’re going to spend huge money suddenly, in a restricted summer.

So what’s the explanation? Well maybe Ter-Stegen’s contract discussions explain it. Cadena Ser have good sources – it might just be that in this case those good sources are leaking false information to add weight to their position in negotiations.
