Chelsea will have to make world record bid to secure Leicester defender

Chelsea have several serious needs in the transfer market this summer, and without question one of them is at left back.

Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are Frank Lampard’s current options in that position, and he’s shown time and again over the course of this season that he’s not particularly enamoured with either of them.

Ben Chilwell has repeatedly been linked as player who is high up on the club’s list of options, but the Leicester defender is an established Premier League player, and will accordingly cost some serious money.

In fact, the Daily Mirror today write that Chelsea would have to pay a “world record” fee for the left back.

The Foxes got £80m for Harry Maguire – a world record fee for a defender – from Manchester United last summer, and will apparently want even more for Chilwell.

A few months ago we would have backed Chelsea to pay that – but with two expensive deals already completed and a potential mega-signing still to come in the form of Kai Havertz, they will have to draw the line somewhere.

Unfortunately for Leicester, and for Chilwell, it might well be here.
