The promising stat from this Premier League season that shows how Chelsea can return to title-challenging

Overall, this has been a great fun season to be a Chelsea fan.

A club legend returned to be manager, tons of young players were introduced to the team, we exceeded expectations in the league – and may well still win the FA Cup.

But we all know what let Chelsea down this season, and what stopped a fun season becoming a truly great one – our defending.

That is made incredibly clear by just how good we were in attack this season. A look at FBRef‘s final table for this season shows that Chelsea had a greater expected goals differential than Liverpool, who dominated the division.

That means that, given the chances we had and the chances we conceded to the opposition, we would be expected to do even better than we did – and even better than Liverpool.

That is all conditioned by the “game state” of course – that is to say that the Reds are such an effective attacking force that they had many games won by half time and were able to ease off later on.

But it’s still a really promising stat that shows just how good we can get this summer if we add some defensive solidity to the team.
