Why the latest reports say Chelsea are in the lead in Kai Havertz race now

Chelsea are in “pole position” to sign Kai Havertz now as their competition dries up, according to the latest reports from Goal.com.

They claim that the Blues are now one of the few teams in the race, as their rivals baulk at the £90m asking price for the Bayer Leverkusen star.

A year or two ago teams like Manchester United and Bayern Munich might not have thought twice about buying a player at that price, but coronavirus has changed all that.

Not only are these top teams operating on a severely limited budget for this season, they are also wary about committing vast sums on fees and contracts in such an uncertain financial environment.

Chelsea on the other hand are flush with money after some big sales and a year out of the market. They now seem keen to capitalise on the depressed market by hoovering up the best talent on the market, and for £90m they see Havertz as an attainable target.
