How Timo Werner could fit in to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea system

It looks very much like Timo Werner is coming to Chelsea this summer, say the Telegraph.

That news is causing quite ridiculous excitement amongst fans, especially due to the way we seem to have stolen him from Liverpool.

But once the hype has died down, it’s time to start wondering about how the forward will fit into Frank Lampard’s plans.

Assuming we do sign Ben Chilwell later in the summer, here’s how Frank’s team could look at the start of next season.

Kepa in goal (he might have some decent competition on the bench behind him by then).

Then Reece James at right back with Azpi ready to fill in at both full back slots.

Chilwell on the left.

At centre-back, if we don’t sign anyone, the battle between Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Antonio Rudiger will continue.

In midfielder, coronavirus permitting, N’Golo Kante will line up with Mateo Kovacic, with Mason Mount just ahead.

Now the questions start – Werner has to be in, and he can drift in from the right with Tammy Abraham leading the line.

It then comes down to Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi for the last slot.

Of course this will change game to game, but the fact that you’ll have players like Azpi, Zouma, Jorgino, Barkley, Pulisic, CHO, Giroud, Alonso (to say nothing of the youngsters like Billy Gilmour) on the bench on a regular basis shows that this squad is set to take a major step up this summer.

“You’ve got so many good young players in NZ, I don’t know how you do it. Actually I do, you’ve got three of the biggest academies in the world: Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.” – Who was taking shots in the rugby world? Find out here.
