Chelsea beat Manchester City last night 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in a very entertaining match.
bet365 users opinions would have been very contrasting before the match, with Manchester City looking the strongest bet for a win. But as we well know as Chelsea fans, never write off The Blues, especially Frank Lampard’s Blues!
Chelsea needed a hero on the night, and that man was USA international Christian Pulisic, who stepped up superbly to race away and put The Blues 1-0 up at the break.
Chelsea have really lacked that type of player who can make a goal out of nothing since losing Eden Hazard last summer. But after a stuttering start and suffering with injury niggles, Pulisic is very much stepping up to the plate with his second goal in two matches for Chelsea.
City soon got back into the match with a superb Kevin De Bruyne free-kick, but their joy was short-lived when Fernandinho was sent off for handling the ball on the goal line giving away a penalty.
Wilian stepped up to beautifully convert the spot kick and Chelsea enjoyed a superb victory over second placed City.
This is a massive three points for Chelsea, as they aim for that automatic Champions League qualifying spot.
They had to tweak their style of play a little though, allowing City to have the lion’s share of possession and ultimately hitting them with pace and energy on the counter attack.
It was a tactical masterclass from Frank Lampard in the end, proving that he is more than ready to mix it with the coaching big boys.
Man of The Match Pulisic believes this will give Chelsea the confidence to go ahead and end the season strong, with a Champions League spot, FA Cup, and even a very slight chance of staying in the current Champions League competition to play for.
The 21-year old winger was pleased with his performance, but overall was happy that his side took all three points and can battle on with the rest of the season ahead.
Speaking to The Chelsea website, Pulisic said:
“The most important thing was that we got the three points that we desperately needed today.
“We went into the game with a really confident mindset to go out and win. Obviously we want to finish the season strongly but we feel we’re capable of a lot more as well.”
Pulisic also spoke about the importance of taking your chances in games like this. Although he brilliantly finished his chance in the first half, he should probably have also scored in the second half and that could have put the game to bed there and then.
“We have to capitalise on opportunities like that. I had another one in the second half as well [which was cleared off the line by Kyle Walker] but I’m just happy to help the team out by scoring. We needed it and we’re just happy to get the three points.”
But essentially, it was the three points that mattered and the American has a belief his team can finish strong, he concluded:
“There are a lot of games to play. We want to go as far as we can in the FA Cup and we want to continue finishing strong so we can be secure in a Champions League spot. We have a lot to play for.”
