Manchester United’s cash-flow issues could give Chelsea the edge in chase for marquee players

While Manchester City and Liverpool have fantastic first XIs and are just looking to increase the depth and quality of their squads, Chelsea and Manchester United are in a different boat.

Both with young managers and young teams, both the Blues and the Red Devils are looking more to one or two marquee signings to actually upgrade their first team options.

That’s meant a lot of crossover in targets, with Jadon Sancho and Kai Havertz the two biggest names that come up regularly in connection with both teams.

James Robson’s report from Manchester in the Evening Standard today then has an interesting angle for Blues fans then. He says United are struggling to generate funds through sales because of the coronavirus.

That could just give Chelsea the edge in their pursuit of those big names. While we will also get less money than hoped for some of our sales, by cashing in our biggest prize last summer in the form of Eden Hazard, and through the enforced transfer ban, we may now be in a position to beat United to at least one of those top signings.
