Chelsea petition Premier League for larger bench as they look to use even more youth

The Premier League is on its way back, but there are going to be some major changes.

For one thing, teams can now make five substitutes. That’s to compensate for the fact that players have been out of action for three months, and now return to a super-intense schedule to try and finish the season.

Muscle injuries are expected to increase as a result, and leagues across Europe have agreed that more subs per game will help combat that.

Chelsea have today gone a step further, and The Sun report that they today submitted a proposal to ask for the number of subs on the bench to be increased from 7 to 9.

That’s just to allow more players to be in the squad, to spread the load of minutes even further.

Of course this benefits the deeper squads of the top teams, and smaller sides may vote it down. It would likely mean more youngsters on the bench, and more chances for players like Billy Gilmour to get on the pitch – so we’re all in favour.
