Schalke star was “wanted” by Chelsea before he made Man City switch

Wonderkid Rabbi Matondo is in serious demand all over Europe at the moment, after making the Jadon Sancho-style move to Germany in January 2019.

He looks settled there, and is getting the first team experience he hoped for when he made the switch.

In fact, he and Sancho found themselves on opposite teams at the weekend when the Bundesliga returned to action.

Speaking to Goal.com, the 19 year old revealed that he had actually come close to joining Chelsea before he decided on Man City:

“Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham were also interested in me. The way City persisted in trying to get me convinced me in the end.”

Of course, just like Sancho, in the end he could see the pathway to the first team at City was going to be extremely difficult to navigate, and he took the brave but smart move to go to the Bundesliga.

There he’s settled in nicely, and is already picking up way more games than he would have at City – or at Chelsea, in all likelihood.

If he continues playing and continues develop at this rate, he may be getting a similar set of high profile offers again in the near future.

“I’d rather have a hole in the squad than an a**ehole” – who said this about his team? Find out here.
