Striker is ‘top priority’ for Frank Lampard and is ‘ready for a new adventure’

Frank Lampard is reportedly prioritising signing a new striker when the transfer window reopens.

The burden has largely been left with the clubs top goalscorer Tammy Abraham so far this season, and Lampard wants to bring in some better competition.

A lot of the talk is surrounding Napoli striker Dries Mertens and Lampard’s desire to bring him in after failing to land him in January.

The 33-year old is Lampard’s ‘top priority’ signing this summer according to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws (as cited by The Daily Express).

The report also says that Mertens himself is now ‘ready for a new adventure’ after seven years at Napoli.

The Belgian international is experienced and versatile as well as being a quality player – this will be what is drawing Lampard’s interest.

He isn’t a forward that will block Abraham’s progress, but he will help it. Mertens can play wide, as a centre forward, or in the ten role – meaning he can often play in the same team as Abraham.
