Chelsea player explains the difference between Championship loans and Premier League starts for a top team

When Fikayo Tomori went on loan to Hull three years ago, it felt a bit like he was being included to go along with Ola Aina to help him out. Aina played more and was far more in the lime-light. Next year, he was playing in Serie A.

Tomori remained more in the background, had a quiet spell on loan with Brighton in the Championship again, then finally made his breakthrough in a third spell in the division, at Derby County under Frank Lampard.

Since then it’s been another big step up, this time to the Premier League, and Tomori wrote last night on the Chelsea website about what the differences were between first and second tier English football:

“You have to deal with the physical side of the game [in the Championship] but then from the Championship to the Premier League, it’s a bit more of a mental change where you have to be even more focused,” the centre back explained.

“You have to be more conscious with how you take care of your body and the little things you can do to improve to get yourself that extra five per cent. Each milestone and level has its own adaptation period where you have to figure out what you need to do and how you can better yourself.”

It was really enjoyable to watch him blossom through last season, with ups and downs along the way, and we can’t wait to see him improve even further this year.
