Chelsea may end long Chilwell chase to save money

Chelsea have been linked regularly with Leicester left back Ben Chilwell for years now, and after all that it suddenly seems possible that we end up moving for a different player in that position this summer.

The England starter was a target long before Frank Lampard was at the club, but all accounts seem to claim that the current manager is a fan and has pushed for the signing since finding Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palimeri lacking in his debut campaign.

But Leicester have money, and Chilwell will cost a lot to prise away from a team desperate to break into the Champions League. The Daily Telegraph report today that another player has come onto Chelsea’s radar as a potential full back signing for the summer: Nicolas Tagliafico of Ajax, who the Telegraph say would be available for £22.4m.

That would be far less than the Foxes starter, but the Argentine will be 28 by the time next season starts, and represents a different kind of target for the Blues, who may feel that spending massive money in a depressed market this summer is a bad idea.
