Chelsea confirm double contract extension for veterans

Chelsea have today confirmed two pieces of admin news that we had already heard were coming – the triggering of one year extension clauses in the contracts of Willy Caballero and Olivier Giroud.

The club announced first Willy, and then Giroud, within an hour of each other.

It seemed likely that at least one of the two would leave this summer, given Chelsea have been heavily linked with goalkeepers recently, and given Giroud himself admitted he came close to leaving in January.

But in the end, perhaps due to the general uncertainty introduced by the coronavirus crisis, the club have played it safe and extended both deals.

That doesn’t rule out a sale, or guarantee any playing time at all, but it does seem to hint at a more conservative strategy from the Blues.

Many fans were disappointed with Kepa Arrizabalaga this season, and will hope that Willy’s extension doesn’t guarantee that the former Athletic stopper is getting another season as first choice.

“The ‘wheeler dealer’ tag that gets trotted out about Harry is a load of nonsense. Harry understands people and he understands football and the biggest compliment I could give him is that he could manage Real Madrid, England or Dagenham and be successful in all three jobs.” – Find out who said this about Harry Redknapp right here.
