£15m goalkeeper is an uninspiring choice as Kepa replacement

Chelsea are in a somewhat difficult situation with regards to their goalkeeper.

They spent a world record fee on Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbo two summers ago, and were hoping that meant they could leave that position as set for the next decade or so.

Instead, less than two seasons down the line and they’re already looking for a replacement, or at the very least competition.

Given the amount they spent, and how recently they spent it, it’s no surprise that they’re looking for cut price options as backups. One of those wh ohas emerged as a possibility today is Roman Burki of Dortmund.

The Sun say he’s a “shock” target as a potential Kepa replacement.

Nobody has ever rated Burki that highly, and that perhaps explains the £15m valuation the tabloid have for him.

We’re all in favour of getting a new option at the back, but this seems like a poor halfway-house. Either spend big on a top stopper, or get a veteran in on a free and hope Kepa improves.
