Willian set for European stay but Chelsea exit looks close

We have known for some time now that Chelsea winger Willian wants to leave the club, and as the end of his contract gets closer we’re finding out more and more about his potential destinations.

His various declarations over the last few days have made it clear that talks with Chelsea over a new deal are over, and it’s now just a question of where he ends up rather than if he leaves.

The priority for the Brazilian seems to be – 1. Stay in London, 2. Stay in the Premier League, 3. Stay in Europe. That’s reinforced by Goal.com’s report today which says that remaining on the continent – and preferably in European competition – is his priority.

Given he’s only 31 and has a good few years in him, it seems very likely a Champions League club comes in for him. If it’s Arsenal or Spurs he’s likely to accept, which would be a blow for Chelsea.

On the other hand, when you let a player’s contract run down, that’s the risk you run.
