Mateo Kovacic was voted Chelsea’s player of the season by fans on Sky Sports’ website.
It was all run rather strangely. For one thing, we don’t even know if the season is over yet. Also, in Chelsea’s case, Kovacic wasn’t even on the list of options people could vote for.
So while it’s clearly him with 31% of the vote, he’s down as “someone else.”
We’re not sure who was putting Jorginho in the poll ahead of him, but they clearly weren’t watching Chelsea this season. Kovacic was by no means perfect, but he was the most consistently good player in an inconsistent team.
Especially around Christmas, he really stepped up when other shrank away. He even managed to score this season.
Let’s hope he can build on it next season, and more pieces are brought in around him to help out.
That is of course assuming they really do mean Kovacic. Can we be sure they weren’t voting for Billy Gilmour instead?
