It would have been great to have been a fly on the wall during the glory days of Jose Mourinho’s spell at Chelsea.
The dressing room speeches, the mind games, the incredible bond that team had. It would have been great to see it all as an outsider.
That’s more or less what Steve Sidwell got to do, coming to Chelsea as basically a total outsider, and barely getting to play. He still got to be there for Mourinho’s final season however, and saw things collapse from close up.
In words carried by the Metro today, the former Reading man revealed which stars were hardest hit by the news that Jose was out:
“When you see strong characters like Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and John Terry either crying on the floor or certainly welling up… I got upset as well. It was really weird,” Sidwell admitted of that fateful day where Jose went.
He says that the players didn’t see it coming, and nor did the fans really. No matter how badly results had dipped, everyone was still behind the manager, and we all wanted to see him stay.
Roman Abramovich was so impatient then though, and standards were ridiculously high. There’s no way players like that would be weeping over a lesser manager than Jose.
