Manchester United lead Coutinho transfer race – and Chelsea should let them win

Philippe Coutinho looks set to be a big name target for Premier League clubs this summer (or whenever the transfer window opens again).

Barcelona want rid of him and his huge wages, and only English sides can really afford him. He’s also a household name over here, and would attract a lot of attention for any aspirational team looking to break the Champions League ceiling.

Manchester United have been linked with the former Liverpool man now in the Daily Mail, apparently in the lead for his signature.

That may be a blessing for Chelsea. Do we want to be the team who signs the big name to make an impression? Or do we want to make smart moves like Liverpool, selling Coutinho when his value had peaked and using that money on Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson.

We don’t need big names, we have a great profile already. We need good players who fit the team, and Coutinho isn’t one of them.
