How John Terry sacrificed himself to help young Nathan Ake

It’s amazing how many football stories are popping up even in this time of no action.

We thought we’d heard them all before, but this long hiatus is forcing players and ex-players to dig deep for new anecdotes to keep us all happy.

John Terry has obliged for us today, with a tale of his last season at Chelsea.

The Blues were blasting to the title under Antonio Conte, but JT wasn’t getting much of a look in. Despite a 3 man back line being used by his Italian manager, Terry was spending most matches on the bench.

According to his words recorded on Football.London today JT went to the gaffer to have a word – but it wasn’t what you’d expect.

Rather than demand his place in the team back, Terry selflessly told Conte he should put young Nathan Ake on the bench instead.

The youngster was able to benefit from being in match squads after being recalled from his initial loan at Bournemouth, and helped out as Chelsea won in the FA Cup semi final.

It was all good experience for young Ake, who that summer went back to Bournemouth, where he was gone from strength to strength.
