European matches suspended “until further notice”

Chelsea are not going to be playing any European games for a while.

Their last game on the continent saw them schooled 3-0 by Bayern Munich, and they won’t be getting a chance to avenge that memory anytime soon.

The BBC reported on the statement from UEFA, which said plainly that the global coronavirus pandemic meant that “all Champions League and Europa League matches have been suspended until further notice” by Uefa because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea were heading out anyway, but this is just confirmation that the season is very possibly over in Europe. The Blues had an impressive run at times, and our two games against Ajax will live long in the memory as a welcome return to exciting European ties, but it’s going to be a while before we see another.

Hopefully next season football is able to recover and we can take part in the Champions League, having played in it this year and occupied fourth place when the Premier League season was suspended.
