Dries Mertens ‘reappears as a strong temptation’ for Chelsea to replace Giroud

There are some fresh transfer rumours floating around this morning and one in particular that has drawn some interest from Italy over night.

Italian paper Corriere dello Sport have written a piece about Napoli striker Dries Mertens, who’s current contract runs out in Naples at the end of this season.

He is already free to speak to other clubs and negotiate his next move, and according to CorSport (as cited by ilnapolista), the Belgian international once again ‘reappears as a strong temptation’ for Chelsea, who could see him as a perfect Olivier Giroud replacement.

Another Italian side Inter have reportedly offered Giroud a contract, so he could be set for the Stamford Bridge exit.

Mertens on a free transfer could be a good option for Chelsea to bulk up the squad and due to his versatility, he can cover any of the forward positions if needed so there should be plenty of game time available.
