Chelsea selling Kante ‘could make logical sense’ claims respected publication

This week has seen a lot of rumours regarding Chelsea potentially selling midfielder N’Golo Kante resurfacing once again.

It isn’t really a surprise considering the French World Cup winner has spent the last two seasons struggling with various different niggling injuries, and he has also reached an age where people will start questioning whether we have already seen the very best of him.

It may well be Chelsea’s last opportunity to cash in big on their asset. And make no mistake, he is still an absolute asset and would still walk in most midfield’s in the world.

However, there are real questions being asked as to whether now might be the right time to sell, and respected publication The Athletic have offered a pretty fair argument as to why this might be.

Their article is centred around the fact that Kante is always better playing double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation rather than a 4-3-3 due to being uncomfortable in advanced areas. Frank Lampard has mainly been using a 4-3-3, so they question whether Kante fits there anymore.

Writers Liam Twomey and Tom Worville said:

“There’s evidence to suggest that he’s [Kante] actually surplus to requirements in his system [4-3-3]. Chelsea are well stocked in midfield and competition for places will grow further when Ruben Loftus-Cheek — who counts goals and ball progression among his biggest strengths — makes his long-awaited return.

“Chelsea selling Kante at this juncture could make logical sense. Injury limited him to appearing in just 22 of his club’s 42 matches across all competitions prior to the football shutdown and, at 29, it is reasonable to wonder whether we have already watched his peak years.

“Chelsea are unlikely to desperately need the cash but any vast transfer fee would give Lampard much greater flexibility in rebuilding this team around a dynamic young core.”
