Chelsea can put €111m on the table for red hot striker

In all honesty, we haven’t been paying that much attention to the links between Chelsea and Inter striker Lautaro Martinez in recent weeks.

Perhaps it’s just the way that the coronavirus pandemic makes it hard to think about a transfer window at all, but it’s been hard to take the links too seriously.

But the more we hear, the more convinced we are. SportWitness has a piece today that quotes papers in Spain saying that the Inter striker has a €111m release clause, but one that has to be activated this summer.

If we’re serious about bringing in a big name name striker this summer, that’s a very tempting clause. It’s a huge amount of money, but that’s what you have to pay for world class players these days.

He’s young and tearing up Serie A – if we want the best, we’ll have to pay, and at least in this case it’s a fixed clause and we won’t get bogged down negotiating.

Whether or not he wants to come and join us is another matter. But there’s no doubting we should be asking the question.
