Potential Coutinho transfer would be a typical disaster for Chelsea

This is going to be a very long transfer season, and there’s no two ways about it. Rumours are going to be brought up time and again, and given nobody knows what the footballing landscape will look like in a few months, it’s very difficult to rule anything out.

Despite that seeing Philippe Coutinho linked with a move to Chelsea was a real surprise, and one feels it’s likely agents making the connection.

From our perspective, it makes little sense. He’s on massive wages, would cost a lot, has had a bad few seasons and isn’t really the kind of player you can imagine thriving in Frank Lampard’s team.

That doesn’t mean we won’t sign him – in fact it would go down a path of bringing in a big name we’ve seen all too often under Roman Abramovich. With Eden Hazard gone and money to burn we’re likely to be keen to bring in a big name when we can – but Coutinho is not the right choice.

We’re building with players who are on the way up, and the former Liverpool player feels a lot more like he’s on the way down.
