Mateo Kovacic reveals more about suspected Achilles problem

Mateo Kovacic will get a scan on his ankle tomorrow, having limped off in the first half against Liverpool.

The Croatian midfielder is a vital player for Frank Lampard, no more so than now with injuries and suspensions set to cripple his team in central midfield for several games in a row.

Even with Kovacic fit we will be at full-stretch, if he’s out we may end up resorting to serious options such as Reece James playing in midfield.

Simon Johnson of the Athletic Tweeted the above from the mixed zone at Stamford Bridge, which is pretty inconclusive but doesn’t sound great. The fact he was walking without any visible treatment or discomfort is a good sign however, and we just hope that the tough former Real Madrid man can recover in a few days and be ready to take on Everton this weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team look dangerous, and without Kovacic we risk playing a very unbalanced midfield.
