Leicester may have overplayed their hands on £80m defender

The season may be over but Chelsea are still looking to strengthen their squad after a year out of the market, and their top targets remain their top targets.

The Sun today report that Ben Chilwell, who we’ve been constantly linked with for the last year or so, remains the player we covet most at left back, one of the problem positions in the side.

Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri look to have come to the end of their time at Chelsea, and one if not both will leave when the window opens, if we’re reading things rightly.

That makes room for a top tier left back, and as it stands it looks like we want Chilwell of Leicester.

The Sun say the Foxes will want as much for him as they got for Harry Maguire last summer –  princely sum north of £80m – but it’s hard to see us paying that.

His second half of the season dropped off massively, and given the global financial situation right now, it’s very hard to see us paying anything like that for him this summer.

Perhaps they should have cashed in on him in January, when those kinds of sums would have seemed a lot more reasonable?
