“I’m not surprised” – Wonderkid’s success was expected

It wasn’t long ago that Mason Mount was the sparkling gem of Chelsea’s academy. As an 18 year old he was sent to Holland where he made a big impact with Vitesse, before a subsequent year on loan at Derby last season.

Now Billy Gilmour is the same age that Mason was when he went on loan for the first time, but instead of having to go and battle his way up through two different divisions, Gilmour has been thrown into the first team straight away – and is thriving.

Asked if the way that BG had slotted in so seamlessly had surprised him, Mount replied in the negative:

“I’m not surprised. I know what he is as a player, as a boy. I am very close to him so I know what character he has. I had no doubts about him coming in, stepping up and performing like the way he has in the last two games.”

Two man of the match awards in a week tells you everything you need to know really. Mount was a prodigy in his time, but Billy is next level. The two of them could be playing together in our midfield for many years to come.

They both have great characters and the skill to succeed at the very top too.

Let’s hope that this is just the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
