Chelsea will not chase Jadon Sancho as they are “not going crazy anymore”

It’s not often you get your transfer rumours straight from the South China Morning Post, but there’s a new dawn for everything.

Today’s edition has a whole feature on Jadon Sancho and his potential move to the Premier League this summer. Chelsea have been seen as among the favourites to sign him. We’ve got money to burn and a squad that needs surgery.

But according to the agent quoted there, we’re not in for Sancho at all:

“I’ve read the Chelsea speculation and I’m convinced that it’s the agents ramping up the talk to try and create an auction situation which would suit them and Dortmund,” the anonymous source said.

“Roman Abramovich is more about patching the squad up now than breaking transfer records. They let Morata go and brought Tammy Abraham back on loan. They took Higuain on loan. They’re not going crazy any more.”

It’s a damning but quite accurate assessment. Everyone has assumed that a few years of frugality, plus the transfer ban, was going to lead to Chelsea spending big this window, but what if it doesn’t? What if we let this summer slide by and Sancho heads to Liverpool or Man U?

There would be some very unhappy fans, who feel entitled to a big signing at this point. But this anonymous source hasn’t even put his name out there, so he can’t be that sure that he’s right.

Let’s see what happens come the summer.
