Chelsea must pick right target in three way left-back scrap

We reported earlier today on the developing situation around Chelsea’s left back situation.

The potted summary is this: Chelsea have two options (Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri). Both had plenty of chances this season, and Frank Lampard doesn’t appear to like either of them long term. This summer the club will likely move to sign another player in that position.

The option we’re most regularly linked to is Alex Telles of Porto. They are happy to sell, if they can get a decent price.

Meanwhile we’ve been linked with another player in that position – Marc Cucurella of Barcelona.

The reports we covered earlier claim that now Porto are ready to swoop for Cucurella, leaving us clear to sign Telles. Sounds promising.

But before we commit to that, we need to ask ourselves whether it’s the right call. Are we really getting the best of this deal? Porto have a legendary scouting network – are we sure they’re not palming off the inferior option onto us for a profit?
