Chelsea cease negotiations with four senior players in midst of corona freeze

Chelsea have stopped all contract negotiations with four players, according to a report this evening in The Sun.

Willian, Pedro, Willy Caballero and Olivier Giroud all have their deals run out in the summer. According to this report, the coronavirus freeze on football and the uncertainty around what will happen and if the season will resume at all has caused the club to put on hold all the ongoing talks they had.

It doesn’t sound much like they were going to find a solution with any of them anyway, so perhaps not much changes. It remains to be seen whether they will be happy to play before the end of their deals, and what happens with the transfer window subsequent to that.

Both Willian and Pedro have expressed some level of willingness to play beyond the end of their currents deals if something can be figured out – you’d have to be an odd player to not want to finish a season you’re 3/4 of the way through.
